International Competition on Second Life for Retired Batteries from Electric Vehicles
On behalf of the Environment Bureau (ENB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, we would like to invite you to participate in the International Competition on Second Life for Retired Batteries from Electric Vehicles (the Competition).
Electric vehicles (EV) have gained popularity worldwide in recent years. In Hong Kong, the Government’s promotion of EV has led to an almost 60‐fold increase in the EV population in less than six years (from less than 100 at the end of 2010 to over 5,800 at the end of July 2016). Since retired EV batteries still have 70% to 80% of electricity storage capacity, their potential for second‐life applications is immense. The Competition will help find innovative and practical ideas for second‐life applications of retired EV batteries, whose number is expected to increase as EV’s popularity grows globally.
The Competition will be divided into two Groups, the Open Group & the Student Group. The former is open to all whilst the latter is open to students up to and including secondary / high school level. The Student Group will help nurture EV awareness in the younger generation as EV is widely regarded as a means to attain better roadside air quality and reduce carbon footprint. For each Group, we welcome individual entry and group entry.
The deadline for registration for the Competition is 31 October 2016, 23:59 (GMT +8:00). For entries under the Student Group, registration must be made through its school via the school’s email account. If the school does not have an email account, a contact email and a declaration letter signed by the school’s principal must be provided to confirm that the contestant(s) is/are its students. Please download the registration form from www.epd.gov.hk/epd/misc/2ndEVbattery/en/ and submit the form to 2ndEVbattery@epd.gov.hk.
Submission & Assessment
The deadline for submission of entry is 31 January 2017, 23:59 (GMT +8:00). The entry shall be an electronic document (either Microsoft Word or PDF file) in English and submitted to 2ndEVbattery@epd.gov.hk.
The entry will be assessed on three key aspects – “Originality”, “Viability”, “Value & Impact” via a three‐tier assessment structure including a Shortlisting Committee (first tier), an Assessment Board (second tier) and a Judging Panel (third tier). The Judging Panel comprises renowned Hong Kong and international experts from the academia and the relevant industries.
The first two assessment tiers will shortlist five finalists for each Group for selection of winners (the Champion, 1st and 2nd runners‐up) by the Judging Panel. The finalists will have to present their entries in English and in person to the Judging Panel at a championship‐cum‐award ceremony to be held in Hong Kong on 25 June 2017. Sponsorship for attending the championship in Hong Kong will be provided to finalists living outside Hong Kong (a maximum of two members for a group entry). If a finalist is below 18 years of age, a guardian will also be sponsored to accompany him/her to Hong Kong, subject to a maximum of one guardian per group entry.
Awards and Visit
Medals will be given awarded to the five finalists for each group. Certificates will be awarded to those among the five finalists with the highest score in each of three assessment criteria (i.e., Originality, Viability, Value & Impact). A sponsored visit to green facilities in Germany will be awarded to winners. If the winner is a group, only two persons from the group will be sponsored for the visit in Germany. If one of the two sponsored members of the group is under 18 years of age, a guardian will also be sponsored to accompany him/her to join the tour.
Details of the Competition are available on the website of the Competition ‐ www.epd.gov.hk/epd/misc/2ndEVbattery/en/.
